Leaves of change

Here it is again –  change. It’s in the air… and in the garden, in our homes and in the shops. It’s in my heart, as well.

Autumn is my favourite time of the year. This is when I feel I can take some time to reflect on the changes that have occurred over the course of the year and to plan ahead (as much as possible) as we race to its conclusion.  I’m not as busy and it isn’t so hot anymore so I can spend more time outside too, either in the garden or taking walks. Those are the quiet moments when I find myself thinking of how things are going, what am I happy with and what do I want to work on changing? How are the people in my life doing, and who do I need to reach out to? How were my gardens this year, and what needs to be different next season? There’s always a plan to fix, to correct, to get it right, to make it better.

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” Maya Angelou said that.

This speaks to how I want to live, striving to be a good person for myself and the people around me. I think that there are always lessons to learn and opportunities to grow from. I strive to put this in practice every day, but somehow I only really assess how it’s going during this time of seasonal change. I get very contemplative right about now.

It’s been a good year, but at the same time, a tumultuous and challenging year. There have been lots of changes, least of all due to our home renovations. Through them all though, we’ve kept moving forward, planning, working, resting, laughing. I’ve also kept up with my seasonal preserving. Of late, it’s been all about the crabapples, the plums and the tomatoes. You can enjoy the fruits of my labour by getting yourself a jar of Crabapple Jelly, Spiced Plum Preserves and Salsa. Go ahead, you’ll love them!

I took this picture on my morning walk with Griffin today. Quite a change from the blue skies and warm temperatures we’ve had. It’s a cool 16°C and we just managed to make it home before the skies opened up. I sat by the patio screen and listened to the noise of the falling rain. So good.

The next fair I’ll be at is the Pierrefonds Public Market outside the Pierrefonds Public Library, on Saturday, October 5th and Sunday, October 6th, from 10am to 4pm. I hope to see you there, Friend!
