And then … the snow fell

I’ve begun thinking about Christmas.
Planning for Christmas. Listening to (and singing!) Christmas songs. Pulling out the Christmas cards. Watching those dreaded Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel.
Perhaps it’s because the days have gotten darker and colder. I just want light and warmth.

Out walking Griffin, we invariably amble by Barry’s house about a block away. For as long as I could remember, Barry creates what I think of as a fairy Christmas forest in front of his cottage home. It always looks beautiful and magical. Even when it’s bitterly cold in the winter, I walk a bit more slowly to enjoy it for a few extra minutes.
This year, Michael and I decided we would attempt to do the same. He drove metal stakes at various spots in the ground throughout the front lawn before it froze and last weekend we went out and bought several pine trees. We got them in different heights. The boys helped lash them to the poles and string them with lights. We then eagerly anticipated nightfall.
The effect was magical. We had created an enchanted wood in front of our home. I stood in the dark and just breathed it in. The smell of the pine, the bite of the cold, the glow of the twinkling lights. There it was – that elusive and heady feeling of contentment and joy at having created such simple beauty. Your everyday, garden variety, magic. The moment couldn’t get any better.
And then … the snow fell.

Where  do you experience magic these days? I do hope you let me know in the comment section below.
