Beautiful Hydrangeas

This summer has been especially warm and wet. It has also been full of spectacular displays of colours and scents. Among the ephemeral wonders of summer, hydrangeas are an apt symbol of how enchanting this season is.

Hydrangeas, with their clusters of vibrant petals ranging from soft pastels to deep blues and purples, paint the landscape in broad strokes. I see them everywhere these days – in parks and along boulevards, in gardens throughout the neighbourhood. They seem to infuse their surroundings with a sense of grace and elegance and structure.

But a hydrangea that blooms vibrant blue one year may not look the same the next. These beauties are known to change colour based on their soil’s acidity and minerals. They will bloom every year for the diligent gardener, but will sometimes have a different hue from the year before. Yet they are still beautiful and graceful, and surprisingly strong. How about that for a metaphor for the imperfections and unpredictability of life?

I propose we aim to be more like a hydrangea; embracing the ever-changing nature of our lives, learning to embrace the challenges and uncertainties that come our way, finding beauty and strength in even the most unexpected twists of life’s journey.

As summer begins to yield to autumn, the hydrangeas will slowly fade, reminding us that all things must come to an end – but this ending too, is not without its silver lining. We can enjoy the blooms even as they dry on their stems. We can also preserve this essence of summer by drying them and having their faded petals continue to grace our spaces with their gentle beauty.

But for today, I will revel in their mesmerizing beauty. I will strive to embrace the lessons that they offer and I will appreciate more of life’s precious moments, finding beauty in my present no matter what its challenges may be. Won’t you do the same, Friend?

I’m off now to put my blooms in vases to spread their loveliness throughout the house.

This coming Friday, on August 18th, I will be at the BEAU Market. I’ve been busy in the kitchen and have made Tomatillo Salsa Verde, more Herbed Salt and my traditional red Salsa with my garden tomatoes. Please visit my Shop and place your order for pick-up on Friday. See you there!

Visit Les Amis du Village Beaurepaire for more info on the Market.
