It’s a small world

Over the course of this last year, my world has gotten smaller.

When the Pandemic struck last March, I came home … and stayed. I had been traveling at the time and therefore needed to spend those first two weeks in isolation. I didn’t go anywhere or see anyone other than my husband, my boys and my dog. My back garden was as far as I got if I really needed a breath of fresh air. Once my quarantine was done, I joined my husband on walks around our neighborhood. We took turns doing the groceries locally (and disinfecting the car, the bags, the keys, the shopping…). School was out indefinitely, so I cancelled projects and contacted partners via email. I soon got familiar with the Zoom platform and was thus able to open a virtual window to the outside. I “saw” students, colleagues and friends.
It’s been a year now. I have gone back to school and been able to enjoy short, socially distant visits with a couple of friends, but my world has shrunk. I do drive to the East-end for work but now shop locally and only walk around my neighborhood.
I would hazard a guess that this has become our collective reality.

And though our world has gotten smaller, Life goes on. There are occasions that need marking and celebrating; babies are born, friends get married, students graduate … Thank goodness. I was contacted last week by a mom who’s baptizing her baby girl. She wants to celebrate this important event with her family. She can’t have a big party but she can give her loved ones a jar of jam as a Thank You favor. I am so grateful that she thought of my small business. I’ve spent a happy week designing her label and preparing her order.
Thank you Sabrina.

I came across this great quote the other day. In my mind (and sometimes for real) I do a happy dance when someone places an order for my preserves. It’s more than just the support and encouragement I feel, it’s also an affirmation that what I make is worth purchasing. It validates the love I have in my heart for my passion.
I believe we need to spread this love and support in our small part of the world. We can do this by buying local. These are some of the small businesses I support – Brezen & Co. ,Crazy about CupCakes , WordsWood , Caterpillar Feet – because I know what it means to the makers when I do so.
